Ranong provincial administration is requesting a budget of 295 million baht for the development of Ranong Port to boost local economy, at the upcoming mobile Cabinet meeting.
Peerasak Hinmuangkao, governor of Ranong, said that the Ranong port was built nearly 50 years ago and is in need of restoration. Work would include alterations to the port’s infrastructure, the construction of shops and other facilities, improvement of waste water management system as well as re-construction of stevedoring areas and a spacious trading zone. He said the development project would help satisfy the criteria for seafood imports set by the EU.
The governor elaborated that the project would not only improve the quality of seafood exports but also contribute to increased value of the exports. Seafood exports shipped from Ranong port currently earn about 3.5 billion baht annually. The expansion project, Mr Peersak said, could add another 350 million baht to the export value. The project will also stimulate the economy as it will make ways for further investment in the fishery business such as cold storage, food processing and ship building.
