The Labor Ministry is set to speedily tackle the problem of labor shortage in the construction sector.

Labor Minister Phadermchai Sasomsub said on Wednesday that the construction industry is now experiencing the shortage of labor because of last year’s flood crisis.

Mr. Phadermchai is urging business operators, who are in need of workers, to contact the Labor Ministry, which will try to find the right types of labor to supply them.

He added that if any company would want to bring in immigrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, they are advised to make a request through respective associations in order to allow for higher negotiation leverage while discussing the issue with the government.

The Labor Minister said that the imports of labor from other countries, such as Vietnam and Bangladesh, are possible to be approved by the Cabinet, if solid and sufficient supporting data can be provided.

He went on to say that the Skill Development Department has been assigned to conduct a feasibility study for the setting up of a construction school, which, if opened, will welcome both unemployed Thais and immigrant workers to attend.

Mr. Phadermchai stated that those who have passed the course will be sent to work in the industry through a collaborative arrangement with business entrepreneurs, who will get to benefit from the workers’ academically-trained skills.
