The Chambers of Commerce of 13 provinces in the North will propose the Bangkok-Chiang Mai and Bangkok-Chiang Rai high-speed train projects to the in-coming government for consideration, Thaweesak Purngworakhun, chairman of Uttaradit Chamber of Commerce, said on Wednesday.
The 13 provinces are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Tak, Sukhothai, Petchabun, Pitsanulok and Uttaradit.
Mr Thaweesak said the train projects should not be developed by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) because they would be obstructed by internal influence in the organization, particularly the SRT Labour Union.
They should be invested by foreign private companies which are interested in these projects, such as Chinese, Japanese and German firms. But the government must include the high-speed train projects in its development plan as mega-investment projects.
The high-speed train projects have high feasibility, safety, can reduce damage from road accident, promote tourism, save fuel consumption as the trains run by electricity and all people can use the services.
