Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kuniharu Nakamura) hereby announces that Sumitomo in consortium with Alstom has been awarded the contract for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of North Bangkok combined cycle power plant (CCPP) Block 2 (North Bangkok 2 Power Plant), from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) .
Sumitomo Corporation won the EPC contract as a result of the international tender opened in February 2012, where the Consortium’s proposal was chosen as the most competitive out of 4 bidders in both technical and commercial aspects. The EPC contract of the Consortium is collectively worth almost USD 500 million.
The North Bangkok 2 Power Plant, which will enter into commercial operation in January 2016, will be constructed on the property of EGAT headquarters in Bangkok. Its 850MW capacity will make it one of the country’s largest power plants and will contribute to the rising power demand from the steady economic growth of the Kingdom of Thailand. The plant, to be fueled by natural gas, will utilize a combined cycle power plant technology with a high efficiency gas-turbine (GT) and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Steam produced by hot exhausts from the GT will drive the steam turbine (ST) to generate electricity, using less fuel and resulting in excellent environmental performance.
Sumitomo will be responsible for supplying the majority of equipment for the plant, such as the water treatment facility and substation system, and for carrying out overall civil and installation work. Alstom, one of the world’s leading manufacturers with a long history of equipment supply to the power generation field, will be responsible for supplying the GT, HRSG, ST and electric generator and for carrying out, as a separate contract, a twelve-year long-term service agreement for the plant.
Sumitomo has long been committed to further developing power infrastructure business opportunities all over the world. This contract is the second large scale thermal power plant in Thailand to be awarded by EGAT to Sumitomo, after the successful completion of North Bangkok CCPP Block 1 in 2010, signed with EGAT in 2007.
Sumitomo aims to enhance its presence in the power generation market in Thailand, where numerous new power plants are being planned, utilizing this experience of North Bangkok 1 and new North Bangkok 2 contract. The company will further devote its efforts to expand energy infrastructure business in Thailand, and across the world.
