SPET Monthly Members Meeting on 15 November 2018 – Talk on “Duty of Care in Unforgiving Locations” By Dr Asadang Dusadiisariyavong and Robert Tyler
The ILO estimates that some 2.3 million women and men around the world succumb to work-related accidents or diseases every year; this corresponds to over 6,000 deaths every single day. Not only does ILO research find that the construction industry has a disproportionately high rate of recorded accidents, but that workplace accidents globally are on the increase.
As companies engaged on major projects move into increasingly challenging and high risk areas, geographical remoteness presents barriers to ensuring timely access to medical services or security support. For the past 30 years International SOS has worked alongside its customers in the infrastructure and resource extraction industries to help them mitigate the risks facing their workforce and exercise Duty of Care in unforgiving locations.
Join Dr Asadang and Robert Tyler from international SOS Thailand and Laos who will share their experiences from a combined 20 years of working on a wide range of projects from Yemen to Papua New Guinea as well as Thailand and Laos.

Robert Tyler was educated at Oxford University and Beijing Language and Culture University. After working with logistics company DHL in Afghanistan and Singapore, Robert started his career with International SOS in 2010 in support of ExxonMobil’s pioneering LNG project in Papua New Guinea. One year later he took up the role of Branch Manager, Yemen. Based in the capital city Sana’a, Robert led a team on the ground supporting energy companies with their medical and security challenges throughout the country during the Arab Spring period.
Following his time in the Middle East, Robert held the position of Country Manager, Myanmar as the country of opened-up to the world and experienced unprecedented levels of investment in the energy, mining and infrastructure segments. More recently Robert took up the position of Head of Sales and Marketing, Thailand and Laos, where he oversees the commercial interests of International SOS, the world’s leading medical and travel security services company.
Dr. Asadang is an active member of the IOGP-IPIECA Health Committee and has contributed to various health guidelines in the oil and gas industries. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from FEU-NRMF, Manila, Philippines in 2000. From 2004-2007 he was appointed head of emergency department at St. Louis hospital in Bangkok, before joining International SOS in 2008 as a coordinating doctor responsible for medical case management, medical evacuation and medical consultation for remote site medical cases.
In 2012, Dr Asadang joined PTTEP as a Medical and Occupational Health Manager. During his tenure he was appointed as Chairman of the Occupational Health Taskforce for PTT group of companies. In November 2018 he returned to International SOS as the Medical Director for Thailand and Laos.
Dr. Asadang has a special interest in occupational health; emergency medicine; medical quality management and medical transport. He also enjoys innovating on health application software.
