19 December 2019

S Hotels & Resorts Public Company Limited (SHR), a hospitality management and property investment company

Subsidiary of Singha Estate PLC, has moved up another significant step of sustainable development as two of its prominent resort properties, Santiburi Koh Samui and Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort in Krabi, have recently achieved highly-acclaimed awards for their environmental preservation efforts.

Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort has recently been granted the Gold Level of the Green Hotel Award, certified by the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. It is one of over 100 properties which have subscribed for certification of this award and is the only resort received Gold Level of Recognition in Krabi.

The Green Hotel Award is honored to the hotel and resort properties which have successfully implemented the environmental protection measures through resource efficiency from upstream to downstream. The award recipients must meet the major criteria of assessment of the auditor team such as environmental policy, public relations, procurement system, environmental preservation, and energy-saving. The award is categorized in three level: Gold, Silver and Bronze. The Gold Level would guarantee the highest quality standard of implementation.

This is the first time for the Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort to receive this award.

Prior to this recognition, early this year, the resort was also certified with a recognition of ‘3  Leaves’ by the Green Leaf Foundation, which was established over 20 years ago under the Thai Hotels Association to help develop tourism in Thailand in tandem with the quality of the environment.

Under the program, hotels and resorts are audited with a sliding scale of 1-5 Green Leaves. Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort joined the Green Leaf Program at the start of 2018 and achieved 3 Green Leaves, guaranteeing its efficiency in resources management such as waste management, recycling, reducing use of plastic and so on.

In September 2019, Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort was also recognized by Thai Hotels Association for the participation and efforts of being a Plastic Free Resort in Thailand.

Along the Gulf of Thailand, Santiburi Koh Samui has also been given a Carbon Neutral certificate by Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization.

“Low Carbon Initiatives” is a pilot campaign established by Santiburi Koh Samui to promote a reduction of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions and combat global warming. Under the scheme, it has

outlines three key action plans: measures to enhance efficient use of electricity and fuel; reduce waste, save energy and climate change; as well as sustainability activities to compensate use of resources. Following this effort, Santiburi Koh Samui has recently been certified as a “Carbon Neutral Resort”.

Mr. Dirk de Cuyper, Chief Executive Officer of S Hotels & Resorts

Mr. Dirk de Cuyper, Chief Executive Officer of S Hotels & Resorts, says “At SHR, we emphasize on sustainable development at all properties across our portfolio whilst growing our businesses.”

“We’re honored to be certified for these two prominent awards.
