Scholars Of Sustenance and Big C supermarket partner up to rescue surplus food and feed the hungry across Thailand
Supermarkets across the world are forced to throw away millions of tonnes of perfectly good food at the end of every day. The reasons for this can vary. Sometimes it’s because the food is not the right shape or size and doesn’t meet supermarkets’ high aesthetic standards. Sometimes it is because the food is nearing its legal sell-by date, even though this does not reflect the food’s edibility.
No matter the reason, this is a big problem. For all of us.
It is estimated that if food waste was a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world (after the US and China), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This means that food waste is contributing substantially to the climate crisis.
The solution seems simple, but it’s not an easy fix.
Selling surplus food can be a very difficult and time-consuming task. One of the main hurdles for big supermarkets that want to reduce their food waste is finding organizations that can put it to good use. And one of the biggest hurdles for food rescue organisations is finding supermarkets willing to donate their surplus food and organising the collection of the surplus food from each supermarket location.
So, it seems that Big C and SOS (Scholars Of Sustenance) have found the perfect partnership. Big C supermarket and SOS have partnered up to rescue surplus food from 20 Big C stores from across Bangkok.
SOS is an organisation that combats both food waste and hunger. They collect surplus food, cook it into delicious meals and give it to hungry families across the nation.
Big C will not only be donating their surplus food, but they will also be providing logistical support to collect and deposit the food for SOS to pick up at the end of the day.
