New Bangkok east-west expressway to open in five years
The Expressway Authority of Thailand plans to call tenders next year for construction of a new east-west expressway, 11.3 kilometres long from Kasetsart intersection to Bangkok’s eastern ring road, to open in 2024, and it will include a monorail.
Exat deputy governor Wichan Ekarintrakul said the N2 expressway project, to cost an estimated 18 billion baht, would be proposed to the Exat board and the cabinet for approval. The construction cost would be paid from the Thailand Future Fund.
Bids for the contract would be called in late 2020, with construction to begin in July 2021 and take three years. The new expressway could open in 2024. It would serve an expected 80,000 vehicles a day initially, rising to 100,000 vehicles a day, he said.
The project would not require any additional land expropriation.
From Kasetsart intersection, the new expressway would be built on previously finished pillars along Prasert Manukit Road. It would run along the route of the Brown Line electric monorail, from Khae Rai to Lam Sali, which would be under the elevated expressway, Mr Wichan said.
The monorail would separate from the expressway when it turns right to Navamin Road, heading for Lam Sali intersection in Bang Kapi district.
