MRTA board moves deputy governor to clear way for bidding probe

Construction News

The board appointed Pirayuth Singhanakul, deputy governor for strategic planing, to replace Mr Chaisit, who moves to an advisory post.

A source said Transport Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan ordered the transfer.

The transfer would not affect Mr Chaisit’s prospects of vying for the job of new governor, Ratchanee Treepipatkul, the board chairman, said.

Mr Chaisit is facing a disciplinary probe for his management of bidding for the 3.66 billion baht track system for the Purple Line electric railway project. The Japan International Cooperation Agency, which funded the project, found only one bidder, Italian-Thai Development Plc, passed the technical evaluation, even though Mr Chaisit’s bidding committee gave passing scores to Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction Plc as well. This has caused delays of several months.
