MRT Purple Line: Thai BAUER Co. Ltd. carries out Foundation Works for Bangkok's new Rapid Transit Line

Construction News

PRESS RELEASE: The MRT Purple Line is a rapid transit line under construction in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, which includes the city and five adjacent provinces. Among other things, elevated structures and 16 stations need to be built for the 23 kilometer long main line. Thai BAUER Co. Ltd., a local subsidiary of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, has been awarded by STECON, the main contractor of contract 2, to execute bored piles with diameters of 1.2 and 2.0 m as well as barrette piles (1.0 x 3.0 meters and 1.2 x 3.0 meters) for the footings of the elevated structures and stations.

A particular challenge was posed by the limited space during the foundation works: the bored and barrette piles have been constructed in the middle of the existing main roads and bridges – with only 4.50 meters working width in some areas – or between the front of commercial buildings and existing high voltage cables. The soil strata consisted of multiple layers of marine clay, stiff clay, silty sand and stiff to very stiff sand; pile toe was between 45 to 57 m.

The works for Thai Bauer were completed by December 2011. In the tight schedule period three grab base carriers GB 34 and two drilling rigs BG 24 were occupied in the project.
