Khon Kaen, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang airport expansions nearing completion
The Department of Airports (DOA) has announced the progress of airport expansions in Khon Kaen, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang.
In Khon Kaen, the DOA has invested about 2 billion baht to build a new passenger terminal since 2018. The new facility will double the airport’s capacity from 1,000 passengers per hour, or 2.88 million passengers per year, to 2,000 passengers per hour and 5 million passengers per year. The capacity of the car park will also increase from 450 parking spots to 1,002. The new terminal is expected to be completed next year.
Krabi Airport will also have a new passenger terminal. With construction starting in 2018, the third terminal is about 50% complete. The DOA has invested about 2.9 billion baht into the facility. It will increase passenger handling capacity from 1,500 people per hour, or 4 million passengers per year, to 3,000 people per hour and 8 million passengers per year. The DOA expects the project to be completed this October. In addition, a new runway is under construction. When completed in the next two years, the airport will be able to handle 24 aircraft per hour from the present eight aircraft per hour.
In Nakhon Si Thammarat, the DOA has invested about 1.5 billion baht since 2019 to build a new passenger terminal. The facility will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from the present 450 passengers per hour to 1,600 passengers per hour, or 4 million passengers per year. The project is about 40% complete.
The Trang airport will also have a new passenger terminal. The project kicked off in 2019 with a cost of around 1 billion baht. The DOA expects to increase the passenger capacity from 600 people per hour to 1,200 people, or 3.4 million passengers a year. The project is 11% completed. The airport will expand its parking bays to support 14 medium-range aircraft, up from four aircraft. The progress is about 45% complete.
