German Firm Awarded Airport Runway Contract

 The Ministry of Communications and the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in Brunei Darussalam have awarded an $80 million project to Dorsch Consult Asia Co Ltd involving the, rehabilitation of pavements and the runway at Brunei International Airport.

This was announced in a recent press release on the German company on March 14, which said that the deal will see Dorsch Consult Asia responsible for the design, tender and project management services for the project.

According to the press release, “Work will start in March 2011 and last approximately 30 months, and local engineering consultant Jurutera Tempatan will be in charge of supervision of the site and all the work that will be carried out under the operation.

“This is the third airport after Bangkok and Bangalore in Southeast Asia which will be rehabilitated by us,” said Jurgen Supik, CEO of Dorsch Consult Asia.

“Our experience; in these countries and our excellent knowledge in airport planning played a decisive role in the contract awarding decision for one of the `most strategically important airports in this region,” he added in the press release.

The DCA has yet to release a statement regarding the deal.

Brunei International Airport currently handles two million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo per year. With operations starting in 1974 to accommodate the popularity of air travel in the 1970s, Brunei International Airport has undergone several major facelifts since its opening.

The airport was upgraded in the mid 1980s and later in 2000 to handle the increasing numbers of passengers and cargo.
