Feasibility Study Conducted on Reopening of Cambodia’s Abandoned Airport in Battambang Province
Feasibility study on reopening of the decades-abandoned Battambang Airport has been conducted by a local firm, giving hopes of a reborn air service in the renowned agricultural province of Battambang.
“We allowed a local Cambodian firm to conduct the feasibility study to find the real situation of the current airport so that we can make a proper decision whether to expand the airport or just renovate the current airport,” said H.E. Nguon Rattanak, Governor of Battambang province while joining a live press conference held on May 13 at the Office of Council of the Ministers.
Working groups from the province, from Ministry of Interior and State Secretariat of Civil Aviation are working with the firm on the project, he added.
The renovation of the abandoned Battambang Airport, once used for military aircrafts, was announced by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, during the 6th River Festival in Battambang province in March.
Located in Battambang provincial city, the airport was opened officially in 1968 and its service was shut down during the Khmer Rouge regime.
Once operated, the airport will ease the travel of people and tourists to Battambang province, H.E. Nguon Rattanak continued.
“People in Battambang province wish to see the reopening of the airport because it will absolutely facilitate the travel to and from the province to other places like Phnom Penh or Preah Sihanouk province,” said the provincial governor.
