Egat International Co, the wholly owned investment arm of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), is further extending its power plant expansion in neighbouring countries with an aim to raise capacity to 8,300 megawatts.
Established in 2006, Egat International’s sole venture is the Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower plant in Laos.
That project, in which the Thai firm owns about 40%, involves the construction and operation of a 289-MW hydropower generation facility on a build-operate-transfer basis.
It is located on the Nam Ngiep River, 120 kilometres east of Vientiane.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project has been signed with the Lao government.
The power purchase contract is expected to be signed between Egat and the Lao authorities soon, with commercial operations starting in 2018.
Egat governor Sutat Patmasiriwat said the subsidiary is considering five other projects for future development, with feasibility studies likely in the coming years.
Egat International is now teaming up with Cambodia’s Energy and Mines Ministry to establish a working group to research the feasibility of the 100-MW Stung Mnam hydropower project.
Some of its output will be directed to Thailand.
The project was initiated in 2005 but has been delayed. It was dusted off after the Pheu Thai Party came to power.
