BANGKOK, 7 November 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has begun the construction of another drainage tunnel as part of the water drainage network to prevent floods in Bangkok areas.
The governor of Bangkok M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra today presided over the official commencement ceremony of the giant drainage tunnel construction under the Bang Sue canal.
This tunnel is the second giant drainage tunnel in Bangkok. The tunnel will hasten water drainage from the inner parts of Bangkok to the Chao Phraya River, which will help in the prevention and relief of flooding in Bangkok.
The Bangkok governor said that this tunnel will be constructed under the Bang Sue canal to help increase water drainage capacity from the Ladprao canal to the Chao Phraya River. It will also help relieving inundation from rainfall on major roads, such as the Phahonyothin road, Ratchadapisek road, Ladprao road, Kamphaeng Phet road, and Sam Sen road.
Covering areas in the northern part of Bangkok, the tunnel will be 6,400 meters long with 5 meters in diameter. The tunnel will have a water drainage capacity of 60 cubic meters per second.
The BMA has started the construction of this tunnel since September 2014 and it is due to be finished within September 2015 with a construction budget of 2.5 billion baht.
This tunnel is a part of the drainage network in Bangkok. The entire network in the Greater Bangkok area also includes other tunnel construction projects under the BMA.
The completion of this tunnel network will help in draining the flood water in Bangkok with a total capacity of 100 cubic meters per second. However, the Bangkok governor said these projects will require the support and cooperation from the government and the Samut Prakan province.
