Myanmar plans to add 3 GW of new gas-fired capacity by 2021
The Myanmar government plans to double the country’s power capacity and has signed preliminary engineering works agreements with six companies including Total, Sinohydro and Siemens to develop four new gas-fired power plant projects with a combined total capacity of 3,100 MW.
Three projects will use imported LNG. The 1,230 MW Kanbauk project in the Tanintharyi Region will be built by Total and Siemens in two phases of 615 MW. The project could redeploy some the infrastructure used by Total at the Yadanar offshore field. The project will be installed in 48 months. The 1,390 MW Mee Laung Gyaing power project in the Ayeyarwady Region will be built by China’s Zhefu and the Myanmar company Supreme Group in 42 months. The project will include a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), where tankers would dock and offload LNG for the plant. The 356 MW Ahlone project will be built by the Thai company TTCL.
The last project, rated 135 MW, will use domestic natural gas and will be built by Sinohydro in Kyaukphyu (Rakhine State). The four projects are expected to be built by 2021 at a total cost of US$5.16bn.
