Traffic has returned to normal on Bangkok’s Phetkasem Road where a giant sinkhole closed the street for hours Thursday night.
According to the Facebook page of Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the 3.5-by-1-metre hole sucked up two traffic lanes in front of Soi 62/1 on Thursday night. The road naturally was closed.
In an update this morning, MR Sukhumbhand said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has finished repairing the hole by 4.30am and the traffic was flowing normally.
He said the sinkhole may opened after earth under Phetkasem was swept away by storm runoff into a large pipe for waste water. The area was the site of construction to lay underground pipes for an electrical train route.
The BMA will further investigate the cause of the incident.
