Alstom wins contract to supply plants with turbine generators

ALSTOM has been awarded a contract by Toyo Engineering Corporation worth about 65 million euros (Bt2.2 billion) to supply 12 units of 35-to-45-megawatt geared reaction steam turbine (GRT) generators, auxiliaries and condensers to Gulf MP Co for 12 power plants in Thailand.

The contract was awarded in the framework of the third phase of Thailand’s small power producer (SPP) scheme.

The project will bring additional capacity to Thailand’s electrical grid and steam to the industries around the power plants.

Daniel Wahler, Alstom’s vice president for industrial steam turbines, said this was an outstanding success where the French multinational had been able to secure a volume order in a very competitive environment.

“It shows Gulf MP’s confidence in Alstom’s innovative and reliable technology. More, this contract reflects our commitment to play a strategic role in the diversification of Thailand’s energy mix.”

Alstom says its GRT steam turbines provide optimised solutions for an efficient and flexible power and steam production.

The first power plant is expected to be commissioned next year and to begin commercial operations in May 2017, with the rest to be operational by 2019.

Alstom has been present in Thailand for more than 40 years, having supplied more than 7 gigawatts of installed capacity in the country. It is currently constructing a new combined-cycle unit in North Bangkok power plant as well as the Asia’s first ultra-supercritical lignite-fired unit in Mae Moh power plant.

Alstom is a global leader in power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure. The group employs 93,000 people in about 100 countries. It had sales of more than 20 billion euros and booked 21.5 billion euros in orders in 2013-14.
