Phuket might be getting its own light rail transit system to ease traffic congestion on the island.
According to Phuket Governor Nisit Chansomwong, the project is expected to cost 24 billion baht. The project has passed three public hearings, with the first held in December 2013, then in the middle of last year and Jan 8 of this year.
The route will be 60km long and link Phuket International Airport with 20 different stations. The maximum speed of the train will be 100kph, but will run slower in the city area. The travel time from the airport to the final station is expected to take about 45 minutes.
The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning is working on the draft for the project’s engineering, architectural design and environment impact assessment.
If the budget is approved, the project is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
