Myanmar to complete 135-megawatt gas-fired Rakhine power plant next year
A US$170 million gas power plant project now being constructed in Kyaukphyu, Rakhine State, is expected to be complete before the end of 2021, said U Htu Htu Aung, deputy CEO of Supreme Trading Company, which is implementing the project.
The project was given the green light by the Myanmar Investment Commission in late 2019. “Kyaukphyu construction has begun despite some delays due to COVID-19. It is expected to be complete in late 2021,” said U Htu Htu Aung.
The 135-megawatt project will supply electricity to Rakhine State as well as the national grid. It is being developed by Kyaukphyu Electric Power Co, which is a joint venture between Myanmar’s Supreme Group and state-owned Power China Enterprise.
The gas turbine for the plant has already been procured and the plant, which will be powered by natural gas from Myanmar, is now 35 percent complete.
Supreme Trading is also involved in the construction of another natural gas-fired power plant project in Mee Lin Gyaing, Ayeyarwady Region, which is now about 20pc and expected to run beyond 2023, according to the company’s announcement.
Myanmar’s generation mix will comprise of 40pc hydropower, 34pc natural gas, 11pc liquefied natural gas and 14pc solar with a total installed capacity of 8118MW in 2021, said U Win Khine, Minister of Electricity and Energy – Translated
