Chinese turbine maker Goldwind has signed a deal to provide three of its low-wind 2.5MW machines to a project in Thailand.
The company signed an agreement with Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO) to provide the turbines to the Theppana wind farm, located about 250km northeast of Bangkok.
It will be Goldwind’s first project in Southeast Asia and is also EGCO’s first wind farm.
It is expected to complete construction in the third quarter of 2013.
The first of China’s wind equipment companies to go overseas, Goldwind has already sold more than 500MW of turbines overseas to markets including Australia, the US, South America and Africa.
Thailand has a small but growing wind market and is aiming to install 1.2GW of capacity by 2021.
Voravit Potisuk, senior vice-president of EGCO’s domestic business, says: “We hope that both sides can deepen co-operation in the future and work together to develop the wind power market in Thailand and even overseas.”
Goldwind says it has already installed 132.5MW of its 2.5MW low-wind turbine model, which has been developed for average annual wind speeds of 6.5-7.5m per second.
