Discussions underway to link Songkhla and Phattalung provinces by bridge over Songkhla lake
The Transport Ministry on Friday held a meeting to discuss the construction of a bridge over Songkhla lake to link Songkhla province’s Krasae Sin district and Phatthalung province’s Khao Chai Son district.
Deputy Transport Minister Thaworn Senniam said the Local Administration Organisation, as well as the subdistrict and village headmen in both districts had called for the construction of a bridge over Songkhla lake to facilitate people travelling between two provinces.
“After the construction of a bridge over Songkhla lake is completed, it will be able to reduce the travel distance by more than 80 kilometres and reduce the travel time by about two hours,” he said.
“Also, it can be used as an evacuation route if a disaster occurs.”
He added that this bridge would help promote tourism, create careers and generate income for people living in the Songkhla lake area as Songkhla and Phatthalung have various natural attractions.
Meanwhile, the Department of Rural Roads said that construction of the bridge would cost approximately Bt3 billion.
“The environmental impact assessment is expected to be completed by April next year,” the department officials said. “The department will summarise the bridge type later.”
