Binh Dinh has approved the Phuong Mai 1 wind power plant in Nhon Hoi with 12 wind turbines and a total capacity of 30MW.
According to the plan, the wind farm will cover 142 hectares and will have 12 wind turbines and a total capacity of 30MW. The wind farm is scheduled to begin construction work in the second quarter of this year and is expected to generate power by the first quarter of next year.
To date, there were 21 wind farm projects under way that could produce enough electricity to connect to the grid. Those wind farm projects were centred in the central provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Lam Dong.
Vietnam’s first wind energy production factory was inaugurated at the Nomura industrial zone in the northern port city of Hai Phong.
While the demand for energy is rising dramatically in Vietnam, development of wind energy is still in its infancy and faces big obstacles.
Surveys show that around 28,000 square kilometres of Vietnam’s land has an average wind speed of over seven metres per second at the height of 65 metres above sea level. This speed is considered suitable by international experts, who offered an assessment potential of over 110,000 megawatts (MW).
A survey by the World Bank has also found that Vietnam has greater wind power potential than Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It says Vietnam is capable of producing 513,360 MW annually. The Phuong Mai 3 Wind Farm, which has an annual capacity of 55 MW, was the first wind power project in Vietnam.
