Thirteen workers were injured and one was missing after a large crane being used in the construction of a bridge across the Chao Phraya river collapsed on Tuesday.
The accident occurred about 11am during construction of an 800-metre bridge across the Chao Phraya river between tambon Ko Rian and tambon Samphao Lom in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district.
The crane fell as it was being used to move heavy building materials on the river bank in tambon Samphao Lom.
Thirteen workers were injured in the accident and one other was still unaccounted for. The injured were taken to hospital and a search begun for the missing worker. Most of the injured workers were Myanmar nationals. Their names were not available.
Two houses and one pickup truck were also damaged.
The bridge under construction is a project of the Highways Department.
Provincial governor Prayoon Rattanaseni and engineers from the office of public works and planning, accompanied by police and military personnel, went to the construction site after being informed of the accident.
The construction site was later declared a prohibited entry area.
Boonlert Kocharoen, 47, site foreman for the contractor Prayoon Engineering Co, said that when it collapsed the crane was lifting a concrete flooring slab measuring 9 x 2.50 metres from the ground to be laid between two pillars about 10 metres above.
He said the 382-million-baht bridge, which will have four traffic lanes, will connect Asian Highway 32 with Highways 347 and 3467.
Prayoon Engineering Co was contracted to carry out the construction, which began on July 1, 2013.
